Add the filter to your theme
The filter only appears on your storefront once it's been added to your blog template in the theme editor. The app builds the links for you, so you don't need to find the block in Shopify's block picker by name.
Step 1: Open the theme editor from the app
From the app's Home page or the setup wizard, choose Add to your theme. This opens your theme editor directly on the blog template, with the filter block already selected to add.
Step 2: Choose where to add it
Two placements are offered, and which one you can use depends on your theme:
- Add as its own section works on every theme. Shopify adds the block as a standalone "Apps" section, which you then drag to where you want it.
- Add inside the blog section only works on themes whose blog template accepts app blocks directly. Themes built on Shopify's Horizon foundation are the main example. Dawn's blog template does not accept blocks at all, and choosing this option there shows Shopify's own error rather than adding anything.
If you're not sure which your theme supports, start with its own section. It always works, and you can switch later if you confirm inline support.
Step 3: Position it on the page
If you added it as its own section, drag it directly above your article list. The block only makes sense there, since it's meant to sit next to what it's filtering. If your theme accepted it inline, it's already positioned inside the blog section and there's nothing further to arrange.
Step 4: Save
Save the theme, then visit your blog to confirm the bar appears. If a blog has no visible tags configured yet, the block intentionally renders nothing on the live storefront. See The filter isn't showing up if that's not what you expect.
If your theme refuses the inline option
That's expected on any theme whose blog template, like Dawn's, doesn't declare support for app blocks. Use its own section instead; every reader-facing feature still works, the only difference is that filtering becomes a normal page link rather than an instant, no-reload swap.
